From Nowhere to Now-here: Centering Black Senses of Place and Placemaking in Speculative Design

Lu, A.J., Umoren-Olorunnisomo, C., Crutcher, C.

Speculative design risks reproducing three layers of “nowhereness”: rendering Black lives out of place, making Black futures nowhere to locate, and speculating from/to nowhere. Centering impacted communities’ situated senses of place and existing labor of placemaking is critical in the shift from nowhere to now-here. That is, the alternative is happening here and now, and it is already happening.
